WHALES ON THIS PLANET ARE ENDANGERED Whales on this planet are endangered. And they have been for some time. Below are some of the latest statistics provided by the World Wide Fund for Nature, International.
- The blue whales of the Antarctic are at less than 1 percent of their original abundance, despite 40 years of complete protection.
- West Pacific grey whale population is the most endangered in the world. It hovers on the edge of extinction with just over 100 remaining.
- Humpback whales could have numbered 1.5 million prior to the onset of commercial whaling in the 1800s; but currently number only 20,000.
WHAT IS KILLING THE WHALES? Between 11th century to the mid-1920s, whales were hunted into near extinction. Unfortunately, initial international efforts to save whales only came in light of whale hunters' concerns that whales had become very hard to find.
Genetic findings of whale DNA have revealed that, at the peak of whaling, tens of thousands of whales were being whaled every year, over the span of several decades. What's worse, most whales were hunted and exploited for their highly desirable, highly profitable body parts. It wasn't until 1925 that the League of Nations--now, the United Nations (UN)-- recognized that the "over-exploit[ion]" of whales had become such a grave situation.
Extinction of the whales species was imminent and something needed to be done.
Today, whaling is formally regulated and closely monitored by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Conservation efforts are strong and the number of hunters around the world have declined. In spite of the progress made, the whaling makes billions of dollars each year as industry. This lucrative reality is what often makes proper control hard to achieve. The existence of loopholes in current anti-whaling laws, have allowed hunters to find ways to hunt whales at detrimental levels. IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT WHALES Research shows that humans are generally unaware of the significance whales have in our world. This is not necessarily because we don't care to know, but rather just not being aware that we SHOULD care. This makes sense. Whales aren't typical family pets nor a popular dish on restaurant menus.
Truthfully, unless we go looking for them--like on a Newport Beach whale watching tour, or in library books, most of us will never encounter a whale during our lifetimes. Whales just aren't common fixtures in our everyday lives, so naturally, they will hardly cross our minds.
But whales actually play a critical role in the sustainability of our planet--from within the oceans to life on land. Click here to discover more about the essential contributions that whales make to our world.
